“I am not honest by nature, but I am sometimes so by chance.” – Shakespeare,The Winter’s Tale

 

 

Shakespeare’s quote captures some of the ideas I like to explore as a composer: contradictions, oppositions, and stark contrasts. In Shakespeare’s play, the tension between the tragic early acts and the comedic resolution is unified by the characters’ development and gradual transformation. Similarly, Sometimes So by Chance is built on musical themes that appear and reappear throughout the piece, undergoing several transformations that create cohesion. In The Winter’s Tale, the characters grow and mature over the years, while in Sometimes So by Chance, the themes evolve organically through each section,ultimately returning at the end in their original and most basic form.
